Rutherford proved (or more his experiments showed it to be highly likely) that there has to be a high density area of positive charge (now described as a nucleus) within an atom surrounded by empty space which electrons orbit.

The previous model was a ‘plum pudding’ notion that an atom was a positively charged sphere in which electrons freely moved around in (rather like fruit in a plum pudding).
