Gastrointestinal infections are viral, bacterial or parasitic infections that cause inflammation of stomach and small intestines.

Intestinal infections can be caused by eating contaminated shellfish, raw or undercooked meat, unpasteurised dairy products or from drinking or swimming in contaminated water. Children, elderly and people who have weak immune systems are most likely to contract intestinal infections.
Bacteria that cause gastroenteritis are Salmonella, Shigella and Staphylococcus.
Viruses that cause gastroenteritis are Rotaviruses, Enteroviruses and Hepatitis.
Parasites that cause gastroenteritis are Entamoeba histolytica and Giardia intestinalis.
