Phospholipids are great because they are amphipathic; they have a hydrophilic (polar) phosphate head, and 2 hydrophobic (nonpolar) fatty acid tails. This means that, naturally, phospholipids form a bilayer with heads facing out and tails facing in. This allows for the creation of natural membranes that are continuous. The polarity of these lipids make the membrane semipermeable.
Triglycerides are great at storing energy because there are so many bonds that can be broken for energy.
Waxes are useful because the hydrophobic nature of the fatty acid chain helps it keep water in plants (their cuticles are wax)
