Explanation:

If the end of the spring is loose, the energy is dissipated (lost) to sound, heat etc. through friction.

If it is fixed in place the wave reflects, with the same frequency & speed (hence same wavelength) and moves in the opposite direction. There will be a #180^@# phase change (#pi# rad) on reflection due to conservation of momentum.

As to increasing frequency, this will reduce wavelength as the wavespeed, #v = f xx lambda# so they are inversely proportional.
