Key Questions

  • Energy of a body is its capacity to do work.

It is measured by the total amount of work that a body can do.

SI unit of energy is Joule.

Its dimensional formula is #[ML^2 T^(-2)]#

There are different forms of energy like mechanical energy, heat energy, light energy, sound energy, electric energy, magnetic energy, chemical energy, nuclear energy, etc.

It is important to note :
Mechanical energy = Kinetic energy + Potential energy

    -OR-

    Mechanical energy = #1/2 mv^2# + mgh

  • The SI unit of energy is joule (J) . It is also the unit for work and amount of heat.

In terms of fundamental units, it can be expressed as:

    #J=(kg*m^2)/s^2#

  • Energy can not be created or destroyed . It can only be converted from one type to another.

Kinetic energy is the energy that a body possess due to its state of motion or rest. It is given by the equation
#K.E.##=##1/2*m*v^2# ; where #m# is the mass of the body and #v# is its velocity.

Potential Energy is the energy that a body possess due to its configuration.

For gravitational potential energy its value is given by
#P.E.=m*g*h# ; where #m# is the mass of the body , #g# is the acceleration due to gravity and #h# is the height above the ground.
