## Key Questions

• Energy of a body is its capacity to do work.

It is measured by the total amount of work that a body can do.

SI unit of energy is Joule.

Its dimensional formula is $\left[M {L}^{2} {T}^{- 2}\right]$

There are different forms of energy like mechanical energy, heat energy, light energy, sound energy, electric energy, magnetic energy, chemical energy, nuclear energy, etc.

It is important to note :
Mechanical energy = Kinetic energy + Potential energy

-OR-

Mechanical energy = $\frac{1}{2} m {v}^{2}$ + mgh

• The SI unit of energy is joule (J) . It is also the unit for work and amount of heat.

In terms of fundamental units, it can be expressed as:

$J = \frac{k g \cdot {m}^{2}}{s} ^ 2$

• Energy can not be created or destroyed . It can only be converted from one type to another.

Kinetic energy is the energy that a body possess due to its state of motion or rest. It is given by the equation
$K . E .$$=$$\frac{1}{2} \cdot m \cdot {v}^{2}$ ; where $m$ is the mass of the body and $v$ is its velocity.

Potential Energy is the energy that a body possess due to its configuration.

For gravitational potential energy its value is given by
$P . E . = m \cdot g \cdot h$ ; where $m$ is the mass of the body , $g$ is the acceleration due to gravity and $h$ is the height above the ground.
