What separates metals and non-metals with respect to the Periodic Table?

I am not quite sure what your teacher is after....

Explanation:

Most elements of the Periodic Table are METALS. Most are solid...a few elements are gaseous, 8-10, and 2-3 are liquid. At your level, it might be useful to divide the elements up into metals, and non-metals....there will be MUCH more metals than non-metals.

Probably metalloids.

Explanation:

Those elements are usually boron, silicon, germanium, arsenic, antimony, tellurium, polonium, and astatine.
