There are numerous ways that tension can be developed through the use of punctuation. A comma or full stop can drastically change the overall flow of writing and this can be developed in a number of ways.
A simple comma - signifying a pause - is a useful tool for developing tension, especially if positioned after a sentence of high modality as it links with the next sentence and can be used to explain important aspects of writing that may have been already mentioned previously.
Similarly, the full stop can create tension through a longer pausing when positioned before or after a word that is reliant on the flow of the sentence. For example, 'I am driving to the city. The city is north of here.' The second 'short sentence' is providing a description of the first - a useful tool for developing your desired tension.
