Exhaustion stage
Explanation:
- Canadian scientist Hans Selye discovered that the body's adaptive response to stress was very general, which he called general adaptation syndrome (GAS).
- General adaptation syndrome (GAS) is Selye's concept of the body's adaptive response to stress in three phases: alarm, resistance, exhaustion. (Will only mention the third phase for the purpose of this answer).
- If persistent, stress may eventually deplete the body's reserves during Phase 3, exhaustion. The person may give up or feel the situation is hopeless.
- Symptoms of exhaustion include: anxiety, depression, fatigue, and burnout. You are more vulnerable to illness at this stage or even, in extreme cases, collapse, and death.
