Redox reaction is when one reactant gets oxidised and another reactant gets reduced in the same reaction
Explanation:
A redox reaction is literally a RED uction- OX idation reaction where one reactant gets reduced and another gets oxidised.
There are a few ways to determine if a reactant is oxidised or reduced.
For oxidation :
- Gain in oxygen (for neutral species)
- Loss of hydrogen (for neutral species)
- Increase in oxidation state or oxidation number
- Loss of electrons
Conversely, for reduction :
- Loss of oxygen (for neutral species)
- Gain in hydrogen (for neutral species)
- Decrease in oxidation state or oxidation number
- Gain of electrons
Hope this helps!
