The primary function of the stomach is to 'churn' food with digestive enzymes that are secreted through gastric glands.
these digestive enzymes are made up of HCL(hydrochloric acid), pepsin(a product of pepsinogen) , and mucous. the HCL kills any bacteria from the food, pepsin is an enzyme that digests protein and the mucous forms a layer around the stomach to protect it from HCL. (which could easily digest the entire stomach)
the stomach accomplishes the churning motion with peristalsis. the stomach walls are both muscular ( made up of 3 layers of muscle) and are folded to create more surface area (for food to come in to contact with the digestive enzymes).after the food is mixed with digestive enzymes it is now called acidic chyme and exits the stomach through the pyloric sphincter.
