An AB₂ molecule has a linear shape.

VSEPR theory states that the valence electron pairs surrounding an atom repel each other. They arrange themselves to make the repulsion as mall as possible. This determines the molecular geometry.

An AB₂ molecule has two bonding pairs. They can get as far apart from each other as possible by being on opposite sides of the central atom at 180° from each other.
