Pencils are manufactured by a variety of companies. Wooden pencils are usually made of cedar wood. Pencils use graphite (a form of carbon), not lead, for writing. It's called pencil lead because the people who first discovered graphite thought it was lead. It is still called lead by those in the pencil manufacturing world, and by most people in the general population.
