You will need good temperature control and elimination of leaks, electrical or other energetic combustion initiators and a good condenser.

Explanation:

I am assuming that by "simple" you mean a two or three-component mixture at most. Good temperature control is necessary to assure that only the distillate you want comes over at the right point. A good condenser is necessary to capture the distilled product efficiently.

In all cases where potentially flammable materials will be present you MUST ensure the safety against fire from the heat source and potential leaks of the materials from the distillation apparatus.

Personally, you should wear a flame-retardant lab coat, gloves, safety glasses AND a full face-shield. Adequate ventilation should be provided in the area to prevent the accumulation of any fumes or materials from the distillation.
