Not to sure on the context of this, but if you are using the laws of Simple Harmonic Motion to determine say, gravity, using #T=2pisqrt((L/g)#
Then:

  1. A pendulum only exhibits SHM for small displacements (systematic error if too large)
  2. You should measure the period by determining the time of as large a number of oscillations as possible (reducing random errors)
  3. take several different readings

I'm not 100% sure if this is what the question is aiming at.
