The greater the friction, the shorter the distance traveled by a moving object.
A ball thrown through the air endures air friction (aka air resistance) or drag in physics due to the opposite force from the air on the ball. That is why the ball will not continue moving after being thrown. It will eventually slow down because the force of the air resistance is greater than the force from the throw. Drag is typically a negative value due to it being a force in the opposite direction of the original.
