What is the difference between "toward" and "towards"?

In modern usage toward and towards are equivalent although toward is the more common American version and towards the more common British version.

Explanation:

There is theoretically a minor difference when used as an adjective or adverb (instead of a preposition). However such usage is uncommon in modern English (found only in Shakespeare, Spencer, and similar writers of that period).
