The New England colonies, The Middle Colonies and the Southern Colonies.
The New England colonies in the northeast were founded mainly as independent religious colonies.
The Middle Colonies were a mix of religious and commercial colonies. Maryland and Pennsylvania were initially founded as religious colonies While New York, New Jersey and Delaware were commercial ventures. By the start of the American Revolution the focus of all of the Middle Colonies was manufacturing and trade.
The Southern Colonies were agricultural with the emphasis on large farms and plantations for the growing of cash crops.
