if the cube is dilated by a certain factor, the length of a side is increased by this factor.

side length is a one-dimensional measurement, since it only measures length.

volume is a three-dimensional measurement, since it includes dimensions of height, width and depth (in the case of a cube).

to find the factor by which volume is increased, you must cube the factor by which length is increased.
