Piper nigrum ( black peppercorns) is a tropical plant cultivated for its black, white and red peppercorns. The flowering vine is cultivated for its fruit, which is usually dried and used as a spice and seasoning.
When dried the fruit is known as peppercorn.
The black pepper fruit has a thin dark pericarp and is completely filled with a seed to which it is closely adherent. The seed is globular and covered with a brown seed coat. The major part of the seed is composed of perisperm.
