The North and the South had different types of economies and slavery was essential to the South

After independence the South and the North took different economic directions. The North had an economy based on trade and it knew industrialization very quickly unlike the South.

The South had a much more agricultural economy led by a slave-owning elite which controlled the lands and produced cotton or indigo. The North industrial elite opposed this kind of economic system because it was unfair competition to them.
