How is fractional distillation capable of purifying drinking water?

Two scenarios are possible.............and both rely on fractional distillation.

Explanation:

#(i)# The impurities are volatile. And thus simply distil the water, and collect the fraction coming across as #100# #""^@C#, and discard the lower boiling point fraction.......

#(ii)# The impurities are involatile. And again simply distil the water , and collect the fraction at coming across as #100# #""^@C#. The still pot retains the involatile impurities.

Before I would drink any of the stuff, I would want to make sure of the nature of the impurities, and also make sure that it is not going to give me dysentery....boiling the water should remove the pathogens.
