In case of some strenuous activity;
- muscle cells break down glucose(present in glycogen) anaerobically to provide required
#ATP# . In this case lactic acid is produced as a product.

#ATP# is also provided by another energy storing compound called creatine phosphate.

Remeber:
Muscle cells are differentiated from other cells in having large amount of stored glycogen and a lot of mitochondria . In low supply of oxygen, muscle cells start to break down glucose anaerobically(in the absence of oxygen). As a result of this respiration, lactic acid is deposited in the muscles. And excess deposition of lactic acid cause muscle fatigue.
