To properly answer this question, we need some kind of metric for comparing potential environments.

Explanation:

How do we compare "the environment" with humans versus the (theoretical) environment without humans.

Most measures that easily come to mind would make us believe that human impact is negative. The terms associated with human environmental impact are primarily negative. However, without properly defining "good" and "bad" environments, this may not be entirely justified.

Suppose for example we include in our definition of a good environment, the support of a large quantity of intelligent life.
