Subject badges are awarded for having a certain level of karma in a given subject: 1 karma for level 1 subject badge, 120 karma for level 2 subject badge, etc.

This answer has the increasing levels of karma for the badge levels (up to level 10): https://socratic.org/karma

That same link shows that karma is earned by writing and editing answers (and getting "likes"). Asking questions is not a karma-earning event and so has no bearing on the subject badge.

Asking questions does earn badges - specifically there is the Inquisitive Mind (5 questions asked) and Bold Learner (25 questions asked).
