Explanation:
You can find some general info on badges on this page.
As you can see, we have two types of badges on Socratic, achievement badges and subject badges.
Subject badges can only be earned by leveling up in a given subject, which in turn depends on how much karma you accumulate in that subject.
Achievement badges, on the other hand, can be earned is a number of ways. For more info on that, check out this answer.
In addition to these badges, we also have badges for Heroes.
