How do you predict the products of an acid base reaction? I know a salt and water is formed - which salt or how?

In a typical acid base neutralization the salt is created by the positive ion from the base and the negative ion from the acid forming the salt and the hydrogen from the acid combining with the hydroxide from the base to form water.

HCL + NaOH ---> NaCl + #H_2O#

The sodium from the sodium hydroxide and the chlorine from the hydrochloric acid for NaCl sodium chloride salt. The hydrogen from the hydrochloric acid and the hydroxide from the sodium hydroxide form HOH or water.

#H_2SO_4 + 2KOH# ---> #K_2SO_4 + 2H_2O#

I hope this was helpful.
