Photosynthesis is the major mechanism for removing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.

Explanation:

Photosynthesis uses carbon dioxide from the air to produce oxygen and "fix" the carbon as part of the plant cellular material. This may move through the carbon cycle eventually as deposited carbonaceous material, or become oxidized again to carbon dioxide.
