# How do I use the quadratic formula to solve x^2+5x=-2?

Sep 30, 2014

$a {x}^{2} + b x + c = 0$

${x}^{2} + 5 x = - 2$

${x}^{2} + 5 x + 2 = 0$

$a = 1 , b = 5 , c = 2$

$x = \frac{- \left(5\right) \pm \sqrt{{\left(5\right)}^{2} - 4 \left(1\right) \left(2\right)}}{2 \left(1\right)}$
$x = \frac{- 5 \pm \sqrt{25 - 8}}{2}$
$x = \frac{- 5 \pm \sqrt{17}}{2}$
