$x - y = - 3$ $x-y = -3$

on adding the two equations $y$ $y$ gets cancelled
$x + cancel(y) = 7$
$x - cancel(y) = -3$

$2x = 4$
$x = 4/2 = 2$

substituting this value of $x$ in equation 1:

$x + y = 7$
$2+ y = 7$
$y = 7- 2$
$y = 5$
