# How do you solve and write the following in interval notation: |x + 5|> 18?

Aug 30, 2017

Given: $| x + 5 | > 18$

Separate into two inequalities:

$x + 5 > 18$ and $- \left(x + 5\right) > 18$

Multiply the both sides of the second inequality by -1:

$x + 5 > 18$ and $x + 5 < - 18$

Subtract 5 from both sides of both inequalities:

$x > 13$ and $x < - 23$

Interval notation:

$\left(- \infty , - 23\right)$ and $\left(13 , \infty\right)$
