# How do you solve the proportion 4/16 = s/8?

Apr 29, 2015

we are given:
$\frac{4}{16}$ $=$ $\frac{s}{8}$

Here, s is the unknown

Leaving s at the R.H.S
We shift 8 to the L.H.S (numerator)

so now we get:
$\frac{4}{16}$ x 8 $=$ s

on solving:
s $=$ 2

So our proportion is :
$\frac{4}{16}$ $=$ $\frac{2}{8}$
note: on solving the fractions we get an equal value of 0.25 on both the sides
L.H.S = R.H.S hence they are in proportion.
