How does the Hubble Space telescope see the universe in the past?

We need a time machine to see in the past and luckily we have got a time machine i.e LIGHT.
Explanation:
Any galaxy or nebulae or quasar or a star is 12 billion light years far means that it need 12 billion years for light to reach our eyes from that celestial body. So, if fortunately Hubble telescope takes the picture of that object, surely the picture is of 12 billion years in the past.
