How does the metal reactivity series work?

Jul 15, 2015

The metal reactivity series lists metals in order of their reactivity, from highest to lowest from top to bottom. A metal listed above another metal will replace that metal in a single replacement (single displacement) reaction.

Explanation:

Example 1.
Does the following reaction occur?
"Mg(s)"+"CuCl"_2("aq")$\rightarrow$$\text{MgCl"_2("aq")+"Cu(s)}$

"Cu(s)"+"MgCl"_2("aq")$\rightarrow$$\text{CuCl"_2("aq")+"Mg(s)}$?
Therefore, "Cu(s)"+"MgCl"_2("aq")$\rightarrow$$\text{no reaction}$
