It has a large number of folds to increase the total surface area for absorption.
In addition to this, it has a number of finger-like projections called villi and microvilli which also aid in absorption.
Furthermore, it also secretes several enzymes which help break down certain foods for absorption.
It also undergoes peristaltic contractions of its strong muscular walls to push the liquid food (chyme) along its length.
