# How many types of chemical reactions exist?

May 19, 2014

There are six basic chemical reactions. All of the million possible reactions that take place are basically classified under one of each of the following.

SYNTHESIS
$A + B \to A B$
${N}_{2} + 3 {H}_{2} \to 2 N {H}_{3}$

DECOMPOSITION
$A B \to A + B$
$2 K C l {O}_{3} \to 2 K C l + 3 {O}_{2}$

SINGLE DISPLACEMENT
$A B + C \to A C + B$
$2 H C l + M g \to M g C {l}_{2} + {H}_{2}$

DOUBLE DISPLACEMENT
$A B + C D \to A D + C B$
$N a N {O}_{3} + K C l \to N a C l + K N {O}_{3}$

NEUTRALIZATION
$H A + B O H \to B A + H O H$
Acid + Base $\to$ Salt + Water

COMBUSTION
$C H + {O}_{2} \to C {O}_{2} + {H}_{2} O$
HydroCarbon + Oxygen #->Carbon Dioxide + Water
