That means its prime purpose is gather light in various portions of the spectrum to detect certain objects at a great distance. In other words, each element emits light at various frequencies which show up as particular colors. If you go to the NASA web page you will find color pictures taken by the Hubble Telescope of galaxies and collections of gas at great distances.
