In genetic code, a stop codon or termination codon is a nucleotide triplet within mRNA that signals a termination of translation into protein.
In RNA stop codons are UAG ( Amber ) , UAA ( ochre ) and UGA (opal ) .
Most codons in mRNA correspond to the addition of an amino acid to a growing polypeptide chain. Stop codons signal the termination of this process by binding release factors. This causes the ribosomal subunits to dissociate releasing the amino acid chain. A stop codon is sufficient to initiate termination.
