A catalyst is an element or compound in a chemical reaction that helps speed it up, or that is sometimes necessary in order to commence it. In the process however, the catalyst does not physically change or become chemically involved. Think of it as a fight; two people are fighting and one is cheering another one on, the one cheering is a catalyst, as s(he) increases the rate of reaction.
