Absolute Threshold is the minimum intensity required for a person to sense its presence. Difference Threshold is the amount of difference needed to notice a change between two things.

For example:

Absolute threshold: How far can a candle be held and still be seen by a person?

Difference Threshold: How many candles would be needed for a person to be able to tell the difference, from a distance, between the brightness of one candle and more than one?
