In simple terms, it means almost ready.

The term beta is actually used in IT to mean the version of a software that comes right before the full version is released.

In other words, the last test version of a software is usually given the name beta release.

Socratic currently has five subjects in beta

  • Environmental Science
  • World History
  • US History
  • English Grammar
  • Psychology

What that means is that these subjects are almost ready to graduate to full status on the site.

These subjects are thus called beta subjects because they are in the final stage of development. All they need in order to become full subjects is 20 high activity days and 20 featured answers.
