Hydrogen of the acid is displaced by metal and it is set free.

Explanation:

an acid contains hydrogen in it.
When active metal reacts with acid , there displacement reaction. Metal displaces the hydrogen from acid and takes it's place. Metal and acidic radical of acid form compound and nascent hydrogen is released. 2 atoms of hydrogen form hydrogen molecule and hydrogen gas is relrased.
