The endoplasmic reticulum is actual a heavily folded extension of the outside of the nucleus. There are two sorts - rough endoplasmic reticulum, which is covered in ribosomes, and smooth endoplasmic reticulum, which isn't covered in ribosomes. The smooth ER functions in fatty acid synthesis.
