Basically a fluid volcano.
Explanation:
They are made almost completely up of basalt, which is a type of lava that is very fluid when erupted.
They are named because of their huge and sunken size, which resembles a warrior's shield.
This is caused by the lava that flows farther than other volcanoes before it cools.
