# What is a volt?

Apr 16, 2014

A volt is one Joule of energy per unit Coulomb of charge.

A volt is the unit used for electric potential, which is NOT the same as electric potential energy!

We find the voltage (elec potential) several ways:
$V = \frac{W}{q}$
W = work
q = charge

$V = \Delta \frac{E}{q}$
$\Delta E =$The change in the energy
q = charge

$V = I \cdot R$
I = current
R = resistance

$P = I \cdot V$
P = power

$P = {V}^{2} / R$
