It is used for deducing the structure of an unknown chemical compound.


From the spectrum, we can identify the functional groups present in the compound. There is a reference table which has data on the absorption range of different functional groups.

Together with other techniques such as mass spectrometry and NMR, we can easily deduce the chemical structure of an unknown compound.
