Explanation:

Got a sample? Shine some part of the electromagnetic spectrum on it, and the incident light may be absorbed. The absorbance is proportional to the number of absorbing species, i.e. it is proportional to the concentration of a sample. And thus spectroscopy can be made to be quantitative.

There is usually some form of spectroscopy appropriate for a specific purpose or application.
