# What is the formal charge for the Phosphate Ion?

Phosphoric acid, ${H}_{3} P {O}_{4}$, can form phosphate salts, i.e. salts of $P {O}_{4}^{3 -}$.
But in water, you would reach a stoichiometric endpoint at $\text{biphosphate}$, i.e. $H P {O}_{4}^{2 -}$. See here.
