Plasma membrane allows the exchange between the cell and the outer environment. Plasma membrane consists of phospholipids, proteins, cholesterols, etc. Proteins allow the exchange of charged species where as phospholipid allows the exchange of non polar small molecules like CO2, O2. Also plasma membrane gives the cell a firm shape.
