# What is the IUPAC name of the compound ?

Jan 6, 2017

Here the longest chain of the compound containing principal 2 functional groups $- C O O H$ has total $7$ C-atoms.
So stem name is 'hept'

and the compound is saturated one .

So next suffix added with it is 'ane'

After that suffix for two $- C O O H$ groups i.e . 'dioicacid' is added.

The only substituent carboxymethyl $\left(- C {H}_{2} C O O H\right)$ group is linked with the main chain at position ${C}_{4}$. So this name is to be added as prefix with locant $4$ before it

Hence the IUPAC Name becomes

$\textcolor{red}{4 - \text{carboxymetylheptanedioicacid}}$
