What is the zone of cell elongation?

1 Answer

See below.

Explanation:

The zone of cell elongation is the region in which newly formed cells by the activity of apical meristem start elongating.

Different regions of growth are very distinct in growing roots.

These regions are:

  1. Meristematic zone.
  2. Zone of cell elongation
  3. Maturation zone or zone of cell differentiation.

The cells in the meristematic zone are actively dividing mitotically to form new cells.

The cells, thus formed, change into permanent cells and start elongating. This zone is termed zone of cell elongation.

After some time the cells stop elongating and the cells attain mature form and structure, changing into different tissues. This zone is termed zone of maturation or cell differentiation zone.

These zones of growth in growing root correspond to different phases of growth.
